Here’s a few fun facts surrounding Virginia and the number 13 👻

Although Virginia was the first permanent English colony, it became a symbolic part of the eventual 13 original colonies—a number forever linked with rebellion, revolution, and mystery.
They say 13 is the number of... rebellion, but what if it was also the number of damnation? When Virginia joined the roster of the 13 colonies, revolution burned through the streets—but so did something else. Old legends whisper that each colony had a price to pay…

-In colonial Virginia, the number 13 was already associated with bad luck due to deeply held European beliefs.
• 13 people at a table was said to predict death.
• 13 steps on a gallows became standard practice.

-At one of Williamsburg’s oldest taverns, a group of patriots gathered to toast their latest scheme: smuggling rebel intelligence through the British line. The only problem? They were thirteen at the table. Despite warnings from the innkeeper, they toasted anyway. Within a week, one of them was found hanging from a tree outside town.
The rest? Caught. Tortured. Or simply… gone.
To this day, the tavern refuses to seat a 13th guest. Glasses fall, candles go out, and the air grows cold. Locals say the 13th man never left—he waits, still thirsty, for someone foolish enough to take his place

-During the Siege of Yorktown, one cannon emplacement—nicknamed Position 13—was notoriously inaccurate, with multiple misfires. Soldiers claimed it was cursed and that every man assigned there was wounded or killed. Some reenactors say the area still gives off strange EMF readings…

-During the Civil War, a detachment of Virginia’s 13th Infantry was sent through a mountain pass in the Shenandoah Valley. They never made it to the other side.
No bodies. No letters. No trace. Just silence. Hikers report hearing marching boots echoing through the fog. Ghostly figures in Confederate gray. Gunpowder in the air… and no birdsong for miles.
Some believe the 13th wasn’t lost—it was taken. And every Friday the 13th, they’re doomed to walk that pass, searching for a war that ended without them.

-They ducked her in the Lynnhaven River on suspicion of witchcraft, and when she floated, they knew she was guilty.
Grace Sherwood was imprisoned, humiliated, and eventually left to rot—until the day she died… on a Friday. Some say it was the 13th. Others say she chose the day.
