Here comes Belsnickel….wait…who is that?!

Belsnickel can trace his origins back to Germany. He became popular in some pockets of the U.S. when immigrants brought the folktale to the Pennsylvania Dutch communities. He wears tattered, patched-together clothing and ragged furs, carrying a... whip. He visits children around Christmas, snapping his whip to frighten the naughty and rewarding the good with candy. His name comes from a combination of the German "belzen" (meaning to wallop) and "nickel" for St. Nicholas.

On this day in 1926, the purchase of the Ludwell-Paradise House was officially authorized, marking the inception of Colonial Williamsburg.

Nestled on the north side of Duke of Gloucester Street, the impressive Ludwell-Paradise is a two-story brick home originally built as a townhouse by ...the affluent planter-politician Philip Ludwell III around 1755. Today, it remains an elegant private residence. This early Georgian masterpiece features a hip roof and a striking five-bay facade that spans 60 feet, rising majestically with a height-to-length ratio of one foot for every 2.2 feet. Constructed in Flemish bond with glazed headers, the house showcases a traditional central hallway with a graceful staircase. The first floor boasts two rooms in depth, while the second floor is just one room deep—a design element typically found in 17th-century Virginia architecture.

On December 31, 1955, the house closed to the public, after a twenty-year run as Colonial Williamsburg’s first small-scale art exhibition.

While most of us are preparing for jolly ol' St. Nicholas to visit, there are those of us in some parts of the world, looking over our shoulders for Krampus. Who is Krampus you ask? What is he? Some might say he is the evil counterpart of St. Nicholas. The legend dates all the way back to the ...12th century in Austria, where good children would be visited by St. Nicholas with presents and naughty children would be visited by the half goat/half man creature known as Krampus with sticks. Depending on their naughtiness they could even be beaten or whisked away to his lair to be devoured.

Frightening, right? December 5th is now known as Krampusnacht. It's the night before the feast of St.
Nicholas where adults dress up like Krampus and chase naughty children through the streets. Celebrate responsibly!
